The journey of motherhood is a beautiful blur of wild highs and lows. From the sleepless nights, the milestones no matter how small and ridiculous they might seem (shout out to all those who dared to embark on that first solo trip out of the house), night feeds, nappy changes, tantrums and cuddles - lots and lots of those! Google is both a hero and a villain in all this, but ultimately you know there’s only so much reading you can do to prepare yourself for the rollercoaster ride that is becoming a parent for the first, second or 10th time!
Q: How are you feeling?! How is motherhood treating you?
I'm feeling great. Motherhood is honestly the wildest ride full of ups and downs and inside outs. I feel very lucky I get to watch both of my children grow every day, learn new things and explore life as they go.
Q: On a scale of 1 – 10, how tired are you?
I've managed to grow into the routine of being woken up by my almost 3 year old son at 5am every morning. It became a routine I love, as my days seem longer and over all I'm more productive throughout the day. The tiredness doesn't really kick in up until early evening hours.
In those early newborn days on the other side I think I just muddled through on adrenaline and snacks and my sleep was all over the place, but these days the tiredness comes more from the mental side of it. Just trying to remember all the things, and be all the things, and do all the things.
Q: What’s your favourite memory from the last 12 months?
It's almost impossible to pick. Motherhood is a beautiful adventure full of ups and downs. Every moment is special, some less :-D !! My most recent favourite memory is our first ever trick or treating as a family together. Each year we throw a Halloween party for the kids and their friends, this year on the other side we decided to go out there dressed up.
It was a beautiful experience to see people get together on the streets and celebrate the spooky day. The excitement in our children that night - is an understatement... Can you imagine seeing their happy faces as their Halloween buckets fill up with sweets as we continue to knock on doors of amazing humans who simply love putting smiles on kids faces.
To see the effort most people put into their decorations was heart warming. Even though Halloween is meant to be a scary day full of ugly make-up and outfits - it turned out to be one of the most magical days in our lives, and it truly comes down to finding happiness in the simplest things!
Q: How has motherhood changed you?
I never know how to answer this question, because there is so much I could say and talk for ages about the woman I became since my first child came into this world. I feel like it’s one of things where I’m so deep into it I don’t know how it’s changed me - because it's almost like I found my true self. Like the loving, caring and responsible woman, that has always been there hidden within - awakened in me...
I certainly have a lot less time to give to myself and others now I have two children - and that's fine. I have definitely learnt to be more present and to live in the moment. From our days out, to all the DIY and activities we do on a daily basis to simply watching a family film together - my children teach me how to live in the here & now, and that is the way forward, and a recipe to a happy life.. When your mind is so still in the time being - that all your worries you might be facing, fade away.
I certainly learned to love myself more, accept my body, I grew in confidence. I became more responsible, creative, patient. I've met amazing women who are now great friends. My priorities changed. I am happier, definitely more tired - but this is my lifestyle and I wouldn't change it for the world.
Q: What has surprised you the most about motherhood?
I feel like I am constantly surprised by even the smallest things as I’m still learning a lot day by day. How quickly each phase passes in this first year is probably a big one. It feels like they take forever to give you their very first little giggle, and before you know it they’re running around chatting away - or talking back haha.
We are at the stage with our 3 year old where he has suddenly started speaking full sentences, and the words that come out his mouth, that we never heard him say before leave us speechless. The knowledge on this boy is incredible, I underestimated it as he wasn't speaking as much, and all of a sudden my son is telling me where the engine is on a car and what it does!
Both of my bundles of joy are two completely different characters, and they shock me daily with the things they come out and how unique, clever, caring and loving they are in their own little way. From the special moments to the silly ones, every day at one point I will stand there baffled.
Q: How would you describe your style, has it changed since becoming a mum?
When I became a mother for the very first time over 5 years ago, I had a strong belief that my dress code should change. That I should dress more mature, ditch the cropped tops, big cleavage and tight dresses. I quickly learned that, it's just wasn't me, trying to fit into clothing that goes against my personality, and my preferences.
I am almost 30, and I still dress as I would 15 years ago! No word of a lie. No one should change their style based on their age, marital status, the circumstances or life milestones, motherhood - you name it. Always stay true to yourself and make sure your visual appearance is exactly how you want it to be and what makes you the most comfortable.
Q: The most random thing you’ve found yourself doing /saying because of mum life?
Honestly, my most used word right now is 'careful'.
